Image: Fury eyeing Rogan, Barrett and Kenna as possible opponents for OctoberBy Sean McDaniel: Despite heavyweight Tyson Fury’s recent comments that he’s only interested in taking on young undefeated prospects like Deontay Wilder and David Price for his next bout in October, Fury appears to be aiming a lot lower than that. In an interview at the Belfast Telegraph, Fury said he’s looking at fighting Martin Rogan, Coleman Barrett or Colin Kenna next.

Rogan is 40-years-old and has been beaten twice by Sam Sexton, and is a step below Fury’s last opponent Dereck Chisora, who Fury defeated by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision a week ago. Coleman Barrett was stopped by Audley Harrison in the 2nd round in October 2009, and has faced nothing but 2nd tier opposition his entire eight year pro career. Colin Kenna, 35, has a record of 16-12-3, and has lost 10 out of his last 12 fights. It looks like Fury is taking it real easy for some reason.

Here’s what Fury had to say in the Belfast Telegraph interview: “I don’t care who I have to box, whether it’s Martin Rogan, Coleman Barrett or Colin Kenna, I want the Irish title next and then I can think about the European title.”

It’s hardly worth it for Fury to fight 2nd and 3rd tier heavyweights for the Irish title when it’s basically taking Fury all the way to the beginning of his career when he was facing rather ordinary opposition. That’s not exactly a good way for Fury to keep growing as a fighter by taking one step forward followed by three steps back.

Fury says he wants to fight for the European Boxing Union heavyweight title against the 6’7″ Alexander Dimitrenko. I can’t think of a worse warm up for that fight than to take on the likes of Barrett, Kenna or Rogan. It seems pretty useless to me for Fury to be aiming at obscure heavyweight titles against lesser fighters and then immediately going up against a world class fighter. It makes no sense and sounds kind of stupid if you ask me.
