Image: 42,000 fans expected for Klitschko-AdamekBy Eric Thomas: According to the latest boxing news, there’s less than 10,000 tickets left for the September 10th bout between WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (42-2, 39 KO’s) and challenger Tomasz Adamek (44-1, 28 KO’s) at the Stadion Miejski, Wroclaw, Poland. A crowd of 42,000+ is expected for the fight with most of them being Polish fans of Adamek.

The huge pro-Adamek fans are likely to have Adamek fighting with a lot of energy and aggression, much more than he usually fights. This could have a negative impact on his performance because Adamek isn’t a big heavyweight and doesn’t have a good chin either. He’s more or less a pumped up cruiserweight with 20 pounds of extra muscle on him.

The extra weight that Adamek has put on since moving up to the heavyweight division in 2009 hasn’t translated to more power. Indeed, Adamek is no stronger now than he was when he fought at cruiserweight, and that’s going to be a problem for him against the taller 6’7″ Vitali. Adamek has never had much of a jab to speak of and when he does his jab, he tends to bend forward and reaches for the midsection of his opponents. He leaves himself open for left hooks, jabs and chopping right hands when he does this.

Thus far Adamek has found success at heavyweight, but a large part of that could be the poor opposition that Adamek has been matched against. He’s fought guys like Michael Grant, Vinny Maddalone, Kevin McBride and Jason Estrada since moving up. These are guys that a heavyweight just starting out his career would be fighting, not someone with 40+ fights. Going from those kinds of heavyweights to a super A class heavyweight like Vlitali is going to be like going to the top of the class without the knowledge of the preliminary material. I doubt that Adamek will be ready, and his boxing fans will be egging him on trying to get him to slug with Vitali. I see this ending badly for Adamek.
