Wladimir: Chisora is the most logical next opponent, possibly in London

By William Mackay: With his new World Boxing Association (WBA) title added to his collection of belts, IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (56-3, 49 KO’s) is looking for his next opponent for December. Wladimir wants to fight someone before the end of the year and is looking to take on the best possible fighter.

British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s) is very much on Wladimir’s radar, provided that Chisora gets by his next fight against unbeaten heavyweight prospect Tyson Fury on July 23.

Wladimir said this at frankwarren.tv.net: “I have lots of options, but Chisora would be a logical choice. I was due to fight Chisora before so it is a fight that could be easily made. i would like to come back to London and fight or we could go to Germany.”

What makes Chisora so tempting for Wladimir is the huge British fan base that Wladimir would be tapping if he were to fight him. While Chisora isn’t a hugely popular fighter in the UK, the British fans will still likely back him in huge numbers if he challenges Wladimir for the title. The same can’t be said if Wladimir fights other guys like Chris Arreola or Alexander Povetkin.

Those guys might be better fighters than Chisora, but Chisora is arguably the bigger fight in terms of attracting fans in Europe. The one problem with Arreola is that he was already beaten badly by Vitali Klitschko, Wladimir’s older brother, so that takes away a lot of the interest in fans seeing Wladimir fight him. Arreola was also beaten by former cruiserweight Tomasz Adamek last year and looked really bad in that fight.
