Will Tomasz Adamek derail Vitali Klitschko?

By John F. McKenna (McJack): With former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye out of the way and the Klitschko brothers in possession of all the title belts is their any fighter out there who poses a real threat to either of the Klitschko brothers? The Klitschko’s are more dominant now than ever before and the question comes up as to how long that dominance will continue.

Former cruiserweight champion Tomasz Adamek (44-1, 28 KO’s) is revered by his countrymen in his native Poland to be the one to rewrite history by defeating Vitali Klitschko (44-2, 39 KO’s). Adamek and Klitschko will square off in Wroclaw, Poland on September 10 in a fight to be broadcast live on HBO.

Tomasz has a granite chin and arguably the fastest hands in the heavyweight division.

But his biggest strength is one that cannot be taught by any boxing coach. Adamek has tons of heart. Boxing fans will not have to wonder after the fight whether or not he gave his all as they did with David Haye’s disappointing performance last Saturday night.

Win, lose or draw, Adamek will give it his best shot when he squares off against the elder Klitschko.

Vitali will be forty years old by the time his fight with Adamek comes off and many boxing fans think the time is right for him to be taken. Adamek’s most recent opponent, Kevin McBride mirrored Vitali’s size. Tomasz easily outpointed McBride with his superior speed, boxing ability and ring generalship. Size however, is the only similarity between McBride and Vitali who is clearly on a much higher level than any of Adamek’s previous opponents.

What tactics can boxing fans expect from Adamek if he is to be successful when he faces Klitschko? Tomasz has said again and again that he is going to rely heavily on his superior speed as one of the keys in defeating Vitali. He has also stated that he wants to slow Klitschko down by going to his body. Adamek is banking heavily on his ability to take Klitschko out of the fight by softening him up with body shots. Tomasz is fully aware that he will have to eat some shots so that he can get inside and get to Klitschko’s chin and body.

Adamek will use angles while attacking to lessen the target area. He will move in, deliver three or four punch combinations and then get out of harms way.

Tomasz intends to psychologically impair Vitali by getting inside his head. When the time is right he will look to deliver a shot to the chin or temple area to take Vitali out of the fight.

Tomasz Adamek believes his strategy for victory will work. He insists that he is confident of victory. It seems unlikely however that he will be able to get inside and bang away at Vitali’s body and weaken him to the point where he is able to knock him out.

Right now that seems to be a very tall order for any fighter.
