Wach should fight Tyson Fury next

By Dan Ambrose: I never thought I’d say this but after watching fringe heavyweight contender Mariusz Wach (25-0, 13 KO’s) defeat the 300 pound Kevin McBride (35-10-1, 29 KO’s) by a 4th round knockout on Friday night in Connecticut, I’m liking unbeaten British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Tyson Fury (15-0, 10 KO’s) more and more.

The 6’7″ Wach actually made Fury look great in comparison, as Wach showed no hand speed, little in the way of foot movement and very average power in destroying an out of shape, badly out of breath McBride with a right hand in the 4th. Some boxing fans are getting hot and bothered about Wach’s KO of McBride, seeing it as an indication that Wach has power and is a fighter to be reckoned with in the heavyweight division, but here to say that he’s going to nowhere fast.

To me, Wach looks like a poor man’s Fury, and I mean really poor. Fury looks not just a little better but a lot better than Wach in every way possible – hand speed, power, punch assortment and ring movement. Wach had the perfect opponent for him to look good against with McBride.

All Wach had to do was aim shots at McBride’s flabby midsection and he’d have him out of breath and ready to drop, and that’s exactly what Wach did. But no way did he look good. I can’t think of a single heavyweight in the top 15 that I can see Wach beating. Forget about the Klitschkos, he would likely be knocked out in the 1st round against both Klitschko brothers, even on their worst night. He’s just too slow. I can even see Tomasz Adamek making easy work of Wach.

But I’d much prefer that Fury be the one, because it would be interesting in a sick sort of way to see Fury destroying Wach. I know they want to take things slowly with Wach in building him up to better opposition, but I don’t see any amount of fights that are going to raise his skills enough for him to beat good opposition. He’s 31, getting older, slow and not a huge puncher. What can you do when you got all those things going against you? Not much.
