Haye shown no desire – Wladimir Klitschko

By Joe Unsworth: I have just watched both Klitschko brothers interviewed on Sky Sports News, and of course, IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko was asked if there would be a re-match with former World Boxing Association (WBA) heavyweight champion David Haye. Wladimir stated that he does not think Haye really wants a rematch because he did not show enough desire at the press conference after the fight when questioned about it.

Wladimir also said that he would have Haye a rematch if he proved his desire by getting another two good wins under his belt against good opponents. Last week, Haye was sat in the exact same studio and said himself that he would delay his retirement date to have the rematch, but he would definitely not fight anyone else to get the rematch and if that was the case, then he would retire.

In that interview, Haye seemed to show a lot of desire for the rematch, leading me to disagree with Wladimir’s claim that Haye is not showing enough desire for it. So as it stands now, if Haye sticks to his word, his career has come to an end as he will not get an immediate rematch unless he has another couple of fights to ‘prove his desire’.

Vitali was also questioned on whether he would like a fight with David Haye, Vitali said that he would relish the prospect of a bout with Haye, and that he would knock David Haye out if the fight was made, but is not looking past his upcoming bout with Tomasz Adamek. From this interview alone, it looks like Haye will be retiring on his 31st birthday and will not box again unless he goes against his word and has a couple of fights to prove his so called lack of desire.

Personally, for the good of boxing and for the good of the heavyweight division, I hope Haye does do everything he can in order to get either a rematch with Wladimir or a bout with Vitali as it will be another massive occasion where the spotlight of the world is on boxing.

Vitali Klitschko is a world champion at the age of 39, proving there is no need for Haye to retire so early, as he is only 30. Haye needs to prove his desire to the Klitschko’s by fighting on and earning another shot at either of the dominating brothers to fulfil what he has called his so called destiny to unify the heavyweight division.
