Danny Green wants rematch against Tarver

By Dan Ambrose: Former IBO cruiserweight champion Danny Green (31-4, 27 KO’s) wants a rematch against 42-year-old Antonio Tarver (29-6, 20 KO’s) after being stopped by him in the 9th round in a one-sided bout on Wednesday night in Sydney, Australia. Former boxing great Kostya Tszyu is advising for the 38-year-old Green to hang up his gloves rather than continuing on with his career, but it doesn’t look like Green is interested in doing that.

Surprisingly, Tarver already is showing interest in fighting Green. It seems like a waste, since the fight really wasn’t all that competitive. Tarver needs to move on to fights against other cruiserweight champions like Marco Huck rather than fighting a guy that he just easily beat. However, if Green can make it worthwhile for Tarver to fight him again in terms of money, it’s possible that Tarver will go down that road again and take on Green.

If you’re a Green fan, it’s probably not a fight you want to see again because Green showed that he doesn’t have the needed boxing skills to beat a fighter as good as Tarver. Green’s only hope in the fight was to try and catch Tarver with one big shot. But as it turns out, Tarver was the bigger puncher of the two and punished Green all night long with hard left hands.

Cruiserweight contender Lateef Kayode (17-0, 14 KO’s) is interested in fighting Tarver. However, Kayode, a fighter trained by Freddie Roach, doesn’t have a title belt in his possession and isn’t anywhere close to being a star. He’s a new comer and is just now starting to get known by casual boxing fans. Tarver would likely easily beat Kayode, as he’s a stiff slugger who has probably even more limited boxing skills than Green. That would be a fight that would be a complete waste of Tarver’s time even more than a Green rematch. But at least with the Green rematch there might be a good payday for Tarver, but that probably wouldn’t the case with the little known Kayode.
