Floyd Mayweather Jr. is one of the most talented boxers in the last twenty years and nowadays there is no other boxer that can be compared to his fine tuned defensive skills; he is a great counter-puncher and his ring smarts are awesome. Yeah sure, he can be annoying sometimes; he can cause a lot of controversy when he talks but some of the best fighters in the history of boxing were also problematic and had issues with the law.
No matter what he does he will always be criticized, but now I believe only a few who refuse to see the truth will keep on bashing on him. Floyd “Money” Mayweather will engage against a young lion Victor Ortiz, perhaps Floyd is over all best talented than Victor, but Ortiz has a bigger heart and is hungry for fame and glory. You can not criticized him for fighting a young prime champion instead of fighting an old champion who is starting to decline and also he is facing Ortiz without any catch weight.
For some the World Boxing Organization (WBO) champion Manny Pacquiao is the best welterweight, but perhaps in the last title defenses he has engage against the wrong contenders, Shane Mosley was simply too old and showed he has lost the fire to compete, now his next opponent is a great fighter but putting aside Juan Manuel Marquez age, Manny is fighting against a lightweight at a comfortable catch weight (144 pounds) for him; he also fought Joshua Clottey who previously have lost to Miguel Angel Cotto. Since winning the WBO welterweight belt against Miguel Angel Cotto by TKO12 (November of 2009) in a great fight he has not engage against the best welterweight fighters available, perhaps the more profitable but certainly not the best competitive ones.
Neither WBA champion Vyacheslav Shenchenko or IBF champion Jan Zaveck can be considered as the best welterweight, as for Andre Berto he was second behind Pacquiao but he was defeated by Victor Ortiz who now can be considered as the best because he is taking the big fights and he is not avoiding the dangerous fighters as others have.
Now the master of the defensive style will try to demonstrate who the real welterweight champion is when he face newly crowned WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz on September 17TH. This fight can be considered as the match up of the year, there have been a couple of fights that will compete for the fight of the year award already and this one might be another one to contend, but for sure this is the match up of the year so far. This kind of fights are the ones that boxing fans needs, two prime fighters facing each other to demonstrate who the best is.
