Image: Mayweather wants to postpone depositionBy John F. McKenna (McJack): Reports are circulating in the media that Floyd “Money” Mayweather (41-0, 25 KO’s) through his lawyers has asked the US Circuit Court Judge in Nevada to postpone the deposition he is expected to give on Friday related to the lawsuit that Manny Pacquiao and his lawyers have filed against him. Floyd’s lawyers contend that he “needs to concentrate on training and not be distracted by preparing for and testifying at his deposition in this case.”

One might ask what’s the big deal? Besides, what kind of “preparation” does he need to give the deposition? All Floyd needs to do is tell the truth. Why would that be so time consuming? Mayweather’s fight with Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO’s) is over three months away and “Vicious” is a huge underdog. What is the problem with taking a few days to prepare for a deposition?

One of the major concerns for Floyd and his attorneys is that he is now isolated in his lawsuit. Originally Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions was named as part of the lawsuit, but when De La Hoya and Golden Boy issued a public apology to Manny Pacquiao it left Floyd Mayweather hanging all alone. In the apology De La Hoya and Golden Boy acknowledged that there was no substantiating evidence that Manny Pacquiao ever used Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDS). The apology covered all bases and De La Hoya went on to say that he never wanted to insinuate that Manny ever did anything illegal to enhance his performance. The apology will enable Bob Arum and Top Rank to work with De La Hoya and Golden Boy in the future.

The settlement between Top Rank and Golden Boy poses a major problem for Mayweather and leaves him in a “catch 22” situation. The last thing “Money” needs at this stage of his career are more legal problems. However he has painted himself into a corner with regard to his accusations against Manny Pacquiao. It would be very difficult for him to now apologize to Manny as De La Hoya has done and admit that his allegations are unfounded. That would also greatly weaken his case that he will not fight Manny due to the random drug testing issue.

On the other hand he is involved in a lawsuit that he cannot win and undoubtedly his legal team has told him that.

It is true that the legal issues Floyd Mayweather is going through can cause extreme stress. It is also true that most of his current legal problems are self inflicted.
