Image: Brook-N'dou on Saturday: Kell hoping a win leads to a title shotBy Scott Gilfoid: 25-year-old #2 ranked WBO welterweight contender Kell Brook (23-0, 16 KO’s) is hoping that a victory over 39-year-old Lovemore N’dou (48-12-2, 31 KO’s) on Saturday night will lead to Brook getting a title shot against one of the welterweight champions. Brook and N’dou will be fighting for the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) Inter-Continental welterweight title at the Hillsborough Leisure Centre, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.

However, it might be a real stretch to see a win over a fighter as old as N’dou putting Brook into a title shot. Brook would be better off skipping the N’dou fight and taking on a top 10 contender instead of looking for the easy route to a title shot. Sure, beating N’dou will keep Brook winning but it won’t get him much attention because N’dou has been getting beaten left and right for the past four years.

Speaking with Sportsvibe.com, Brook said “Maybe a world title fight is next for me, but who knows?” It looks like Brook is taking the old backdoor route to a title fight.

Well, let’s see. Brook won’t be fighting WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, so that ones off his list. He won’t be fighting WBC welterweight champ Victor Ortiz either. The other options are the paper champions IBF belt holder Jan Zaveck and WBA champion Vyacheslav Senchenko. I kind of doubt that Brook will get a fight with either of them, but if he does what point is there if Brook will just be another paper champion? I don’t see Brook beating Zaveck, and I doubt his promoter would allow him to fight that guy.

Senchenko would also be a very tough fight for Brook because Senchenko has a great jab and is capable of out-boxing Brook. No, I don’t see title fight happening next for Brook. Hopefully he starts facing some live bodies after this and not just old guys or local lads. Being ranked at number #2 should mean that Brook is willing to take on the best. I’d settle for some of the lower ranked guys in the top 15 like Shawn Porter and Luis Carlos Abregu, who, sadly, would be a monumental step up in competition for Brook.
