Vitali vs. Liakhovich possible for June 4th

By Jason Kim: According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (42-2, 39 KO[s) is considering taking on former WBO heavyweight champion Siarhei Liakhovich (25-3, 16 KO’s) on June 4th in a fight that will be shown on EPIX, an American television cable company.

Vitali, 39, recently destroyed top contender Odlanier Solis in one round last month, but because of how quick the fight was, Vitali is looking to get back in the ring in June for another fight. The 32-year-old #14 ranked WBC contender Liakhovich would seem like a perfectly awful choice if Vitali was at all interested in pleasing boxing fans.

Liakhovich, who briefly held the World Boxing Organization heavyweight crown in 2006 before losing it by knockout to Shannon Briggs in the same year, has done pretty much zero since losing his WBO strap. He’s fought exactly three times in the past five years, winning two and losing one. He was totally dominated by the slow-moving, weak-punching Nikolay Valuev in a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision loss in 2008.

Liakhovich has fought a couple of times since then, beating 2nd tier fighter Jeremy Bates in 2009 and Evans Quinn in 2010. Sadly, Likhovich is one of the more recognizable contenders that the WBC has ranked in their top 15. This is perhaps the only reason why Vitali would be interested in fighting Liakhovich, because he’s basically dropped off the heavyweight map through inactivity.

A Klitschko-Liakhovich bout would be about as competitive and as interesting as Vitali’s fight against Albert Sosnowski last year. That fight was painful to watch and it seemed like Vitali carried Sosnowski for nine rounds before taking him out in the 10th. If Vitali carries Liakhovich for nine or ten rounds, it will still be brutal to watch Vitali is so much better.
