Stieglitz vs. Gevor on Saturday, 4/9

By Jason Kim: WBO super middleweight paper champion Robert Stieglitz (39-2, 23 KO’s) will be making his 4th title defense of his World Boxing Organization title this Saturday night against the smaller 5’8” Khoren Gevor (31-5, 16 KOs) at the Bordelandhalle, Magdeburg, Sachsen-Anhalt, German.

For the 29-year-old Stieglitz, this about the usual class of opponent that he’s been fighting since winning his title against Karoly Balzsay in 2008. Stieglitz has been facing mostly unknown guys and not dangerous fighters like Andre Ward, Carl Froch, Mikkel Kessler, Lucian Bute and Andre Dirrell. Gevor has lost two out of his last three fights, making him an odd choice for a champion to fight unless that champion was looking for an title milking fight.

Stieglitz was supposed to fight WBA paper champion Dimitri Sartison, but he came up lame and had to pull out of the fight. Gevor was supposed to be fighting Matthew Macklin on April 16th, but Macklin pulled out of the fight and will now be facing WBA World middleweight champion Felix Sturm.

Gevor isn’t ranked in the top 15 by the WBO, as of now. I’m wondering if his name will suddenly materialize in the top 15 before the week is up. Gevor really should be still fighting at middleweight because he doesn’t have the size to fight at super middleweight. He moved up in weight last year in July and was beaten by Sartison.

Why Gevor decided to stick it out at super middleweight is beyond me because he’s just too short for this division and will likely lose against any quality fighter he faces. Stieglitz shouldn’t have any problems beating Gevor, even though Stieglitz is incredibly limited. Stieglitz was soundly beaten by Librado Andrade in 2008. Since that defeat, Stieglitz has been unbeaten, but hasn’t faced anyone of real quality.
