Morales to get nice payday for Maidana fight

By Eric Thomas: Even though 34-year-old Erik Morales is likely going to get torn apart and obliterated tonight by knockout artist Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27 KO’s), Morales will be getting a nice little payday according to Dan Rafael due to the Mexican television money and pay-per-view upside.

If this fight does well on PPV, Morales will get a good paycheck to go home with. It is kind of sad that he’s fighting someone as dangerous as Maidana without a step up fight to prove that Morales belongs in the same ring with the Argentinian slugger.

Goodness knows, Morales hasn’t shown that he belongs in the same ring with Maidana based on how Morales has looked in his three comeback fights against Jose Alfaro, Willie Limond and Francisco Lorenzo. Those guys aren’t in Maidana’s league, yet two of them – Alfaro and Lorenzo – fought well enough against Morales to deserve a decision win.

They didn’t get the win but that’s a whole different matter. Morales has got his hands full against Maidana tonight in their fight at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Morales has got to hope that Maidana runs out of gas the same way that middleweight contender David Lemieux did in his loss to Marco Antonio Rubio. Maidana unfortunately doesn’t run out of gas in his fights.

If anything, he seems to only stronger and his opponents weaker as his fights progress deep into the later rounds. Morales by then – if he’s still around – will have taken a massive amount of punishment and won’t be looking too good.

The judges will have to be in a very kind mood towards Morales for him to get the nod in this fight if he looks as poor as he did in his wins over Alfaro and Lorenzo. I can’t see the fight even getting to the judges’ scorecards because Morales will have soaked up too much punishment for the fight to be allowed to go past the 9th or 10th rounds.
