Adamek-McBride early results

By Jason Kim: All I can say after watching Tomasz Adamek (44-1, 28 KO’s) beat journeyman Kevin McBride (35-9-1, 29 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night is that WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko has nothing to worry about from Adamek. He stands no chance against Vitali. Adamek looked very, very average tonight in winning a decision over a 285 pound McBride at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. What is sad is that Adamek chose to fight McBride rather than an actual contender and put the fight on pay-per-view.

The fight was horrible to watch with Adamek running around the ring, throwing shots and then scampering away. On one occasion, Adamek actually turned his back to McBride and ran away from him. It was something out of a bad movie, it looked so bad. Adamek mostly got away with his hit and run fighting because McBride was so huge and slow. Adamek could peck and run without getting hit until the 7th when Adamek began to slow down and get clobbered even when he was getting ready to run away. He still landed a lot of pesky shots but from the 7th until the end of the fight in the 12th, Adamek was hit fairly often.

Adamek appeared to get knocked down at the end of the 3rd with a left to the body from McBride. However, the referee ruled it as a slip. It really didn’t matter because it wouldn’t have been enough to change the course of the fight even if the referee had counted the knockdown.

Adamek doesn’t look anywhere near good enough to beat Vitali. Adamek doesn’t look good enough to beat a handful of top heavyweights in the division. The problem is he’s too weak, and not particularly fast either. He gets hit a lot and his only defense is his hit and run style. But when he comes in to land his shots, he’s so utterly hittable it’s not even funny. Vitali is going to destroy Adamek without any problems. Too bad Adamek wasn’t interested in facing any quality heavyweights before fighting Vitali. When you get someone taking the easy path to a heavyweight title like Adamek it makes you wonder why they’ve chosen to do this. In looking at how poor Adamek looked against McBride tonight, I think I know the answer.
