Image: Maidana undecided about a rematch with MoralesBy Eric Thomas: Marcos Maidana (30-2, 27 KO’s) says he isn’t sure if he’ll fight a rematch with Erik Morales (51-7, 35 KO’s) after beating Morales by a 12 round majority decision on Saturday night a the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Maidana says he wants to fight all of the top contenders and doesn’t know whether he should go over old ground by fighting Morales one more time. Their fight is definitely in the running for fight of the year honors due to the exciting back and forth nature of the fight. Maidana ended up winning the fight by the scores of 114-114, 116-112 and 116-112.

After the bout, Morales, with his right completely closed, said “I want a rematch. I thought I won.” Maidana initially agreed to a rematch but now he may be having second thoughts about it. Obviously, he’s take the rematch if the money is there but if it isn’t, he’s going to move on because he’s got some good options available to him. Maidana can either fight the winner of the Lucas Matthysse vs. Devon Alexander fight this summer or he can look to take on the Amir Khan vs. Timothy Bradley winner if Bradley comes out the victor.

If Khan wins, then Maidana likely won’t get a chance to fight him because Khan isn’t particularly interested in fighting Maidana again after taking a beating from him and escaping with a close 12 round decision last December. There is also the possibility of going after Zab Judah, the IBF light welterweight champion. As you can see, Maidana has a lot of appealing options in front of him and doesn’t need Morales unless the demand is there for this fight and the money is good. HBO will likely want to show Maidana-Morales 2 because of how exciting the fight was and because of the high ratings it brought in with fans.
