Image: Adamek unimpressive in decision win over McBride, Klitschko nextBy William Mackay: In a fight that looked more like a sick comedy than a serious professional bout, heavyweight contender Tomasz Adamek (44-1, 28 KO’s) defeated a big overweight Kevin McBride (35-9-1, 29 KO’s) by a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision last Saturday night, winning by the scores of 119-108, 120-107 and 119-108 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The fight was one that really should have never been put together in the first place because of the difference levels of talent between the two fighters.

McBride, who cruised into this fight having lost four out of his last five bouts, was far too fat and slow to do much. It was like watching a big overweight dog chasing a reluctant cat around the ring all night long. It was not pretty to watch at all. Adamek played his usual hit and run game, only he seemed to tire after the midpoint of the fight and started to get hit more and more. Adamek doesn’t have the power at heavyweight that he had at cruiserweight and light heavyweight, and because of that he’s more of a peck and run fighter. He’s not interesting to watch and looks like chunky looking cruiserweight without speed competing against 2nd and 3rd tier heavyweights. Adamek has been very selective in the types of heavyweights he’s fought since moving up in weight.

Adamek spent most of the fight throwing weak punches to the midsection of McBride and then immediately running away in what looked like a game of tag. It was comical to watch. Every once in awhile, McBride would time Adamek perfectly and tag him with a big right hand or left hook, which would send Adamek scurrying away in retreat mode. I didn’t like the way that Adamek’s head would snap sideways when he would get hit. I think this doesn’t bode well for him in his next fight against WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko.

Adamek is going to get hit a lot in that fight and he doesn’t seem to react well when he gets tagged. I can see Vitali knocking him out early in that fight, perhaps in the first three rounds. As we saw in the McBride fight, Adamek likes to throw body shots but because of his short arms, he has to lean forward to throw them. Vitali will time Adamek like the big and slow Mcbride was doing and knock him out with a chopping right hand. I don’t like that fight at all. I’d much prefer Adamek to fight a contender like Odlanier Solis or Alexander Povetkin. I think Adamek would be lucky to beat either one of those guys. He doesn’t stand a chance against Vitali.
