Khan-McCloskey taken off Sky Sports schedule

By Sean McDaniel: Yesterday it was learned that WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan’s April 16th bout against little known challenger Paul McCloskey (22-0, 12 KO’s) had been moved from Sky Sports pay-per-view to Sky Sports 3, making it available to be seen on free television. However, Sky has now completely take the Khan-McCloskey fight off their online schedule for April 16th, making you wonder whether they will be showing the fight at all. It’s unclear what’s going on with this, as it was thought that the fight would at least be available to viewers for free.

The Khan vs. McCloskey bout hasn’t attracted a great deal of interest from the boxing public, and the move by Sky Sports to take the fight off PPV could indicate that the sales for this PPV event were less pleasing. Khan and his team selected the little known McCloskey over a much eye-catching fight with Breidis Prescott, believing that there would be a lot of interest in the Khan-McCloskey fight due to the rivalry between Irish and English fans. However, it doesn’t appear to be working out that way. Khan may have been better off selecting Prescott, even though Prescott has suffered losses to Kevin Mitchell and Miguel Vazquez recently.

Prescott still holds a 1st round knockout win over Khan. However, Khan feels that Prescott hasn’t done enough with his career to be worthy of fighting him again. Khan felt that McCloskey, who has never even fought a 1st tier opponent in his career, was a step forward for him compared to Prescott. Well, it doesn’t appear boxing fans have been all too interested in Khan’s choice of opponent unfortunately. In hindsight, they may have been better off putting it to a vote with a test audience as to who Khan should fight next. My guess is more people would have chosen Prescott than McCloskey by far.
