What if Morales pulls a victory against Maidana, could it give him a shot at Pacquiao?

By Gerardo Granados: Erik Morales has a chance to defeat Marcos Maidana in their fight on April 9th, but he is supposed to have more chances to get knocked out by him. Either way he has the ring smarts and vast experience to pull an upset, he has a good chin, he knows very well how to hurt the body of his rivals, but lacks of power to stop Marcos so the most probable scenery would be that “if” he is the winner it would come by split decision. If Maidana is up to win he must win by knock out in the early or mid rounds of the fight to make some impact on his fans, but he wont impress the boxing world by doing so.

Maidana is quite multidimensional fighter, now he will be trained by Rudy Perez, who prepared Marco Antonio Barrera, this fact lacks of relevance because Maidana and Barrera have different boxing styles been Barrera better over all skilled than Maidana who´s defense is average and relies on his strength and power to pressure his rival until he is able to connect him hard enough to stop him; Barrera is a complete fighter so there is no need to compare his boxing style with Maidana.

Former WBC – WBA lightweight champion Roberto Duran was older, smaller in size than Morales when he upset the younger and much bigger Iran Barkley to win the WBC middleweight title in 1989, so will Erik be able to make the best out of his opportunity?

But what if Erik Morales pulls out a victory? Could this give him a chance to fight against Congressman Manny Pacquiao? If Morales wins he would become champion in four different weight divisions been the first Mexican fighter to achieve this feat.

If Morales is able to upset Maidana he will achieve more than one thing by doing so. He is in a win – win situation, if he losses then nothing happens because he was supposed to do so; but if he wins he could be able to secure a fight against Pacman and also secure a big retirement purse. After all he is the last fighter to have defeated Pacman so this fight might generate big revenues for all the involved. I guess Pacman would fight him at a catch weight for one of those new welterweight titles available. Maybe “if” Morales upsets Maidana then Marquez, Khan, Martinez, Bradley and others would have to wait after Morales deals with Pacman.
