Image: Sergio Martinez: The most dangerous fighter on the planet right now?By Tom David Drury: Sergio Gabriel Martinez is one of the hottest tickets in boxing right now, (born 21/2/1975) in Quilmes, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Martinez is the current ring world middleweight champion, ring magazine currently ranks Martinez third in the pound for pound rankings and named him there fighter of the year for 2010. Martinez embarked on his professional boxing career at 20 years old, his professional record consists of (47 wins, 2 losses and 2 draws) his most notable wins came against Kelly Pavlik where Martinez became middleweight champion, and a spectacular 2nd round knockout over Paul (the punisher) Williams in there second fight.

Martinez has also overcome Sergei Dzinziruk by way of (TKO) in his most recent bout. Dzinziruk was widely regarded as a dangerous fighter by the boxing public and the general opinion was he would be a stiff challenge for Martinez, however Martinez totally dominated, knocking Dzinziruk down numerous times, stopping him in the eighth. Sergio’s first professional loss came by way of the (Tijuana Tornado) Antonio Margarito (19/2/2000) at the Mandalay bay resort & casino in Las Vegas, this was the first time Martinez had fought outside his native Argentina.

A lot of boxing fans are of the opinion Martinez deserves the number one spot in the pound for pound rankings (i disagree) although if Martinez keeps fighting the high level of opposition and winning, it will not be long before he occupies that position. It seems Martinez is after the big money fights (rightly so) by calling out Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Martinez is not getting any younger and needs to secure his future financially, Martinez should not hold his breath, he is way too dangerous for both fighters. There are still big fights out there for Martinez. Dmitry Pirog the WBO champion, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, Kermit Cintron who held Martinez to a draw, a possible trilogy fight with Paul Williams and the most obvious, Miguel Angel Cotto the current WBA Jr middleweight champion.
