Sergio Martinez hoping to get Chavez Jr. vs. Zbik winner

By Dan Ambrose: If former WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KO’s) gets his way he’ll be fighting the winner of the June 4th clash between WBC champion Sebastian Zbik (30-0, 10 KO’s) and challenger Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) next in 2011.

However, Martinez better not hold his breath waiting to get that fight, especially if it’s Chavez Jr. that comes out the winner. Bob Arum, the promoter for Chavez Jr., likely won’t want to send Chavez Jr. into an almost certain beat down in a fight against a fighter like Martinez. The reason is pretty obvious. Chavez Jr. is a guy that’s popular because of his famous father Julio Cesar Chavez, but Chavez Jr. doesn’t have anywhere close to the same ability.

He’s also hasn’t exactly been matched against the top fighters in the division in the past eight years as a pro, and his fight against Zbik, a fighter who is considered a paper champion, is another relatively safe fight for Chavez Jr. Martinez is considered to be the best fighter in the middleweight division and if Arum were to allow Chavez Jr. to fight Martinez, he would be basically sending Chavez Jr. to an almost certain loss.

This is why Martinez will likely not get a fight with the young Chavez unless the World Boxing Council steps in and forces Chavez to take that fight. However, Chavez will likely fight someone in Top Rank’s stable after the Zbik fight, if Chavez comes out on top. Arum will likely look to put Chavez Jr. in with some of his Top Rank fighters, such as Miguel Cotto, Joshua Clottey or possibly even Kelly Pavlik rather than have Martinez be the one that takes away Chavez’s unbeaten record and exposes him for the first time.
