Pascal vs. Hopkins II to take place in Montreal

By Dan Ambrose: ESPN is reporting that the long awaited rematch between WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal (26-1-1, 16 KO’s) and 46-year-old Bernard Hopkins (51-5-2, 32 KO’s) will be taking place on May 21st at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Canada. This is hardly earth shattering news because we already knew that the fight really had no other options but to take place in Canada because Pascal is totally unknown in the United States among casual boxing fans and Hopkins has no fan base in the U.S other than with a certain segment of the hardcore boxing fans. In Canada, where they really love boxing, Pascal fights in front of huge crowds of 10,000 fans despite not having a really entertaining fighting style.

The terms for the fight have been agreed upon but the contracts still haven’t been signed says Richard Schaefer, Golden Boy Promotions CEO. Hopkins and Pascal fought in front of 16,500 fans in Quebec last year in December in a fight that ended in a disappointing 12 round draw. Hopkins felt he should have won, as did a lot of boxing fans. But Hopkins wasn’t able to impress two of the judges, who scored it a draw.

The problem that Hopkins was that he was knocked not just once but twice in the fight. That’s generally a sign that you’re going to have some problems especially when you really don’t start take over the fight until the 5th. I agree that the fight should have been scored a draw because Hopkins gave away a lot of points getting knocked down and he lost some other rounds as well. If Hopkins wants to win, he needs to stay on his feet and stop getting knocked down.

Two time light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson will be fighting on the undercard vs. Adrian Diaconu in a fight where Dawson has to win order to get a fight against the Hopkins-Pascal winner. Dawson was supposed to get a rematch with Pascal, but the WBC ordered the Hopkins-Pascal rematch and that messed things up for Dawson. The Dawson-Diaconu fight will likely be the best fight of the night because the Hopkins-Pascal fight will likely be another stinker with a lot of wrestling on the inside by Hopkins and not enough punching from Pascal. There fight last December was painful to watch because of how boring it was. Interesting to watch it was not. I can’t believe HBO wants to put this fight back on. I’d skip that one and opt for one of the Klitschko fights any day of the week rather than putting on a rematch with those guys.
