Ortiz – I plan on taking Berto’s title home on April 16th

By Jason Kim: 24-year-old southpaw challenger Victor Ortiz (28-2-2, 22 KO’s) plans on taking away WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto’s (27-0, 21 KO’s) title away from him on April 16th in their important fight at the Foxwoods Resort Casino, Mashantucket, Connecticut. For Berto, this is an important fight because it will be by far his biggest fight of his career and his opportunity to show that he’s not a fighter that has been carefully matched against beatable guys in order to prolong his time as a champion.

Right now, you can’t say that because Berto has somehow been matched up against a lot of guys from the light welterweight division and a small handful of unimpressive fringe welterweight contenders than dangerous fighters like Mike Jones, Saul Alvarez, Antonio Margarito and Shane Mosley when was looking better.

Ortiz has power and is a much bigger puncher than anyone Berto has faced thus far. Ortiz is probably the bigger puncher of the two in this fight, but his hand speed isn’t quite as good as Berto’s and his poise and confidence isn’t as good either. However, Ortiz could take Berto to places he’s never been before in this fight and we may see a much less confident Berto when he starts getting hit with Ortiz’s powerful uppercuts and right hooks. Ortiz is a southpaw and Berto is going to be getting hit with shots from a whole different angle than he’s been used to getting hit in the past. He may not know how to handle this, even with a lot of sparring against southpaws in training camp.

Ortiz said “On April 16, I’m taking the title home.”
