Khan-McCloskey: A win over the hand-picked McCloskey won’t prove much for Khan

By William Mackay: WBA Super World light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) has selected the light hitting Paul McCloskey (22-0, 12 KO’s) to might next on April 16th at the M.E.N. Arena, in Manchester, England. This fight, along with his July fight against WBC/WBO champion Timothy Bradley, will likely be the last fights for Khan at light welterweight before he moves up in weight to the welterweight division to try and pursue fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Shane Mosley.

Khan may be more than a little misguided by his dreams of fighting Mayweather because he could be going to prison and thus Khan would be moving up in weight to fight Mosley, who will be 40 soon. There really isn’t anyone else for Khan to fight at welterweight besides Mayweather, who probably won’t be available to him, and the 40-year-old Mosley. Khan won’t fight Manny Pacquiao, and Mosley is going to get beaten up by Pacquiao in May. That’s going to make Khan look great going after Mosley at that point.

Khan probably will never fight Saul Alvarez, because Khan would have major problems taking the power shots from Alvarez. Can you imagine Khan standing up to Alvarez for 12 rounds like Matthew Hatton recently did? I can’t. This is why I don’t see Alvarez-Khan ever being made. The same goes for Mike Jones. He hits too hard and is too rugged for Khan. He won’t ever get to fight Khan. If Khan fights WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto, Khan will get knocked out.

I don’t see Khan fighting that guy either. The fact of the matter is that the only guys I can see Khan fighting at welterweight are Mosley, and maybe Mayweather if he doesn’t go to prison. Heck, Khan is better off staying at light welterweight and fighting Marcos Maidana and Lucas Matthysee. Those are the best fighters in the division. Bradley clearly isn’t. We saw that with his fight against Devon Alexander recently.
