Haye-Klitschko could bring in $70 million, but still no venue

By William Mackay: The unification bout between WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-1, 23 KO’s) and one of the Klitschko brothers is going to be one of the hugest boxing events ever with a possible $70 million at stake for this fight. However, the bout still doesn’t have a venue because of the number of potential hosts. Currently, the number of hosts are as follows: Germany, Switzerland, Monaco, South Africa.

It’s seems like an insane idea to put it anywhere other than Germany or the UK, however, because you’re going to be asking boxing fans to travel far to see this fight and it could hurt the attendance. When the smoke clears, the fight will almost surely take place in Germany in one of three huge soccer stadiums. The fight won’t be taking place in the UK, though, because the Klitschkos don’t want to fight there and you can’t blame them. The British fans are incredibly loud compared to the Germans and it would be tough for either of the Klitschkos to fight in that kind of environment with all the noise.

Adam Booth, the trainer/manager for Haye, believes that the venue for the fight will soon be known by April. He sees the fight taking place in Europe in an indoor arena to avoid rain.

The one concern is whether Wladimir will be ready for the fight by June or July. His manager Bernd Boente believes Wladimir’s nagging abdominal injury will be healed by the time the fight goes ahead in the summer. However, if it doesn’t heal up, Vitali will be the one that ends up facing Haye. It really doesn’t matter which Klitschko fights Haye, because he’s going to be giving away a lot of size and experience and will likely be way over his head no matter which one he faces. Haye has done well against the older heavyweights he’s been exclusively matched against but he looks too small and flawed to beat the Klitschkos.
