Fragomeni suffers cut, Huck now looking for a replacement opponent for 4/2

By Dan Ambrose: 41-year-old former WBC cruiserweight champion Giacobbe Fragomeni (27-3-1, 11 KO’s) suffered a cut while training for his April 2nd title challenge against WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck (31-1, 23 KO’s) at the Gerry Weber Stadium, Halle, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. The card will continue as planned with a replacement opponent to be brought in to fight the 26-year-old Huck, who is making his 6th title defense of his belt that he captured in 2009.

If Huck needs a replacement opponent, he might do well to consider Russian slugger Denis Lebedev, a fighter who Huck controversially beat in his last fight by a very questionable 12 round split decision in December. Few boxing fans that saw the fight felt that Huck won it, and it’s disappointing that he and his promoters didn’t want to clear up the controversy by giving Lebedev a rematch in a neutral country. Their fight in December was held in Huck’s adopted country of Germany with Lebedev traveling from Russia to take the fight. I had Huck losing 9 rounds to 3 in a pretty clear cut loss for the WBO champion.

Don’t expect Lebdev to be selected. Fragomeni was ranked #8 in a weak division. You can expect someone along the same lines in terms of quality for Huck in a fight that will likely be another mismatch. It would be good to see Huck take on contender Ola Afolabi or Alexander Frenkel. Don’t hold your breath waiting for either of those fights to happen. Huck beat Afolabi by a narrow decision in 2009. Afolabi has improved since then and I can see him beating Huck in a rematch.

The April 2nd card has an interesting fight between heavyweight contenders Robert Helenius and former WBC heavyweight champion Samuel Peter. This fight needs to be the main event.
