Froch vs. Johnson: Carl can’t win without an inside game

By Scott Gilfoid: Going into their May 21st Super Six tournament fight, WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch is favored to beat 42-year-old Glen Johnson by pretty much everybody in the boxing world. Froch is seen as too young, too strong and too hungry for the aging Johnson.

However, I see a whole lot of problems ahead for Froch in this fight and I don’t think Froch will be able to handle Johnson’s superior skills. When you take on an old veteran like Johnson, you have to have mad skills to beat him. Either that or you have to be blazing fast like Andre Dirrell or Andre Ward.

I hate to say it but Froch is about as slow as they come. Sure, I’ve seen slower fighters than Froch in my time, but Froch is right up there with some of the slower fighters in the super middleweight division. Okay, so Froch doesn’t have the speed to overcome Johnson’s better overall skills. But most importantly, Froch doesn’t have an inside game.

I mean he can’t fight on the inside worth a lick. Look at Froch’s fights. He doesn’t fight on the inside at all. The closest that Froch came to fighting on the inside in an extended fashion was in his fight against Dirrell, when Froch spent good portions of the fight wrestling with Dirrell, holding and hitting and throwing rabbit shots at close range. That may technically be inside fighting, but it’s not the expert inside fighting that you’ll see from Johnson on May 21st.

Froch is going to find himself getting pummeled by Johnson on the inside and he’s not going to be able to do anything about it other than get angry and get rough. The thing of it is the fight is going to take place in the U.S, where extracurricular things like fouling often cause the fighter that does them penalized. If Froch wants to win this fight, he’s going to have to learn fast.
