Image: Burns may have some problems with Laryea on SaturdayBy Sean McDaniel: The light hitting WBO super featherweight champion Ricky Burns (30-2, 7 KO’s) may have a fight on his hands on Saturday night against the 5’11” Joseph Laryea (14-4, 11 KO’s) at the Braehead Arena, Glasgow, Scotland. Burns, 27, is the older fighter by two years, but Laryea punches a lot harder and can punch with a lot of power either hand. Laryea is similar to Colombian Breidis Prescott, a fighter that took out Amir Khan in one round in 2008.

Laryea is especially dangerous with his right hand. In his last fight, he beat up Paul Appleby last December, butting him up and winning a 12 round decision. Burns is the better fighter on the inside but Laryea has a loose fighting style and incredibly long arms. He prefers to fight on the outside where he blasts away with looping shots very much like Prescott. Burns may be in for unset even if he’s in excellent shape.

Laryea is someone that is hard to predict what he’s going to do because of how awkward he is. His power and long arms makes him much more dangerous, because he looks his shots from a long ways away and that they hook around and catch his opponents when they least suspect it.

Burns will be fighting at home and will be getting a lot of backing from his fans. However, Laryea is going to be tough because the guy is going to be looking to take Burns head off with every shot. He’s not someone that will let Burns work on the inside against the way that Andreas Evensen and Roman Martinez let Burns get away with.
