Witter upset at being rejected by Khan for McCloskey fight

By Sean McDaniel: Former World Boxing Council (WBC) light welterweight champion Junior Witter (37-3-2, 22 KO’s) isn’t pleased with having been rejected by WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) for a good money fight on April 16th at the M.E.N. Arena, in Manchester, England.

Khan, 24, had been looking to fight the rusty, 37-year-old Witter, but then dropped the idea and went with unbeaten EBU light welterweight champion Paul McCloskey (22-0, 12 KO’s) instead. Witter is the much better known fighter and he may have brought in better numbers for the Sky Sports pay-per-view bout. However, Sky and HBO reportedly turned down Witter as a choice, something to do with not wanting to take the gamble.

Witter had recently said on Sky Ringside that he could no longer make 140 pounds for the light welterweight division. As it turns out, this revelation may have come back to haunt Witter because it caused many people to be skeptical about him being able to make weight for the fight. The last thing that the fight needed was Witter coming in over the limit at the last minute, possibly jeopardizing the fight.

Witter had this to say about being passed over by Khan in an article at thesun.co.uk: “It’s ridiculous. Their excuses were about me making the weight but it boils down to motivation. I haven’t got the motivation to box Joe Bloggs at light welterweight, but Amir Khan would be different.”

Witter has a fight coming up on February 19th against little known Victor Lupo (18-1-2, 9 KO’s) in a 10 round welterweight bout at the Hershey Centre, in Misssissauga, Ontario, Canada.
