Maidana says that Juan Manuel Marquez doesn’t want Beristain, who just happens to be his long-time trainer, to train Maidana.

Speaking on his twitter account, Maidana said “Amazingly, at the last minute Beristain decided not to train me. My team and I are very upset since we had an agreement since 10 days ago. We arrived in Mexico City and were supposed to train with Nacho the next day. But two hours before going to the gym, he said he couldn’t do it. Nacho said Marquez wouldn’t allow him to train me. It seems that Marquez is jealous and scared of the possibility of facing me some day. Nacho didn’t even bother to talk to me. He only did it with my adviser. He just left us abandoned. Why he made us travel to Mexico? Not very pro from Nacho, right? But lucky Mexico is a land of boxing and here we’ll stay to train in the heights. My new trainer is Rudy Perez.”

That’s pretty shocking news if you ask me. Looks like Marquez is concerned with having to face Maidana at some point in the future. However, I think Marquez would have been better off training with Maidana so that he could figure him out. This would have been a great opportunity for both Marquez and Maidana.

Maidana, 27, is getting ready for his April 9th fight against Erik Morales at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He recently let go his trainer Miguel Diaz and thought that Beristain was going to train him. But he’s got Perez, and that should be fine. Maidana has a huge power advantage over the 34-year-old Morales and this could be a one-sided fight, although some boxing fans think Morales might be able to out-box Maidana if he can stay on the outside and avoid mixing it up with the hard hitting Argentinian.

It’s going to be a huge task for Morales because he’s looked thick around the middle during his comeback and sluggish on his feet. He’s not the same fighter that fought wars with Marco Antonio Barrera in the past. Morales is much slower and doesn’t throw nearly as many punches as he used to. He’s struggled recently to beat fighters like Willie Limond and Francisco Lorenzo. That’s not a good sign because those guys aren’t in the same league as Maidana in terms of power.
