By William Mackay: WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) feels really good about having picked out the unbeaten Paul McCloskey (22-0, 12 KO’s) as his next opponent to fight on April 16th at the M.E.N. Arena, in Manchester, England. Khan is under the impression that his British boxing fans really want to see his fight with McCloskey rather than say a rematch with Breidis Prescott.

Strangely enough, I hadn’t noticed that there being a huge cry from British boxing fans that wanted to see Khan take on McCloskey, a light hitting EBU light welterweight champion who has never fought a 1st tier fighter before during his career. But Khan seems to think British boxing fans really want this fight, and he’ll be showing it to them on 4/16 on Sky pay-per-view.

In a statement at Sky, Khan said “I’m delighted that this fight has finally been put together following some tough negotiations. This is a match-up the British public want to see and will be a fantastic fight between two of the best light welterweights in the country.” Okay, what ever you say, Khan. I don’t that is nearly as interesting a fight as a rematch with Prescott or a fight with Marcos Maidana or Lucas Matthysse. Those seem like much better fights to me than to see Khan face a weak puncher like McCloskey. Khan doesn’t want to fight Prescott again because he’s lost two out of his last five fights since his 1st round knockout win over Khan in 2008. But then again, Khan wasn’t interested in fighting Prescott even when he winning after losing to him. Seems like Prescott is off limits because of his power. McCloskey is weak, so this should be a nice safe fight for Khan.
