40-year-old Robin Reid hopes for a DeGale fight

By Sean McDaniel: Former WBC super middleweight champion Robin Reid (39-6-1, 27 KO’s) says he hopes for a possible fight against unbeaten British super middleweight champion James DeGale (9-0, 7 KO’s) if everything goes alright for the 40-year-old Reid in his upcoming March 23rd Prizefighter super middleweight tournament at the Olympia, in Liverpool.

The chances are slim, however, that Reid will come out on top in that tourney because it’s got some quality fighters like Carl Dilks and Tony Quigley taking part in the tourney. I can’t see Reid beating either one of those fighters, so his talk of wanting a DeGale fight would likely hinge on whether DeGale would be interested in facing Reid coming off of a couple losses in the tournament. My guess is no. It’s not a fight that would do much to further DeGale’s promising career.

In an article at the dailystar.co.uk, Reid said “James DeGale is out there, of course, and that could be a great fight for me down the line.”

Reid hasn’t fought in four years since being stopped by Carl Froch in the 5th round in 2007. He’s currently lost two out of his last three fights, and that’s not good given that he’s looking to face some quality fighters in the Prizefighter tournament. Reid is clearly ambitious by wanting to jump straight into the Prizefighter tourney rather than taking things easy by facing some soft opponents and then asking for a fight against DeGale. But to start talking about DeGale with the Prizefighter tournament coming up, it’s like guessing about the future when things don’t look promising.

A fight between DeGale and Reid would be a huge mismatch at this point. It would have been a huge mismatch in 2007, but it’s even worse now unless Reid has kept himself well preserved. That’s doubtful.
