By Chris Williams: Recently beat former WBC light welterweight champion Devon Alexander (21-1, 13 KO’s) could face number #4 ranked WBO light welterweight contender Lucas Matthysse (28-1, 26 KO’s) next, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. Alexander lost his last fight to WBO champ Timothy Bradley by a 10th round technical decision last month, and was hoping to put together a fight against WBA light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana.

Unfortunately, Maidana opted to face #1 ranked WBC contender Erik Morales on April 9th, and thus Alexander was left without an opponent. However, it now looks like Alexander could be facing the hard hitting Matthysse next. That would be an excellent fight for both Alexander and Matthysse. Alexander especially needs this fight badly, because a lot of boxing fans feel that he quit in the Bradley fight in the 10th round. Alexander fought poorly in that fight, didn’t seem to react well to Bradley’s pressure and didn’t put his punches together very well. And to top it off, Alexander seemed to milk the time-out after he was hurt by a clash of heads in the 10th. It looked like Alexander didn’t want anymore of Bradley in that fight.

Matthysse lost a controversial 12 round decision against Zab Judah last year in November, in a fight that Matthysse appeared to have won after knocking Judah to the canvas with a right hand in the 10th and battering him the rest of the way. Matthysse, however, rebounded from that fight with an impressive eight knockdown 8th round knockout over DeMarcus Corley last month on January 21st. Matthysse showed a lot of power when throwing shots to the body in that fight, as well as in the Judah fight. Matthysse brings a lot of the same excitement to his fights as does fellow Argentinian Marcos Maidana.

Alexander might be in over his head with Matthysse, because he’s got better power than Bradley, and is a better pressure fighter than he is.

Alexander’s trainer Kevin Cunningham and Matthysse’s promoter are said to like the idea of this fight happening. Indeed, Matthysse’s promoter had this to say in Rafael’s article: “We would do that fight in a heartbeat. We’d go to St. Louis. I’m going to talk to HBO and Don King next week about that.”
