Image: Adamek vs. McBride: Tomasz's tune-up before his Klitschko fightBy Eric Thomas: Heavyweight contender Tomasz Adamek (43-1, 28 KO’s) will squeeze in one last fight against 37-year-old Kevin McBride (35-8-1, 29 KO’s) on April 9th before facing one of the Klitschkos later on in the year in September. Adamek, 34, will fight McBride at the Prudential Center, in Newark, New Jersey. This should be an easy fight for Adamek, because McBride has lost four out of his last five bouts and is getting beaten by C level fighters.

During the prime of his career back in 2005, McBride was a B level fighter, whose claim to fame was bullying an old shot Mike Tyson to the ropes and stopping him in the 5th round in 2005 when Tyson ran out of gas. That win only showed how shot Tyson was more than revealing any real talent that McBride possessed, because he’s only won two fights since then. That kind of gives you a good sign of what kind of fighter McBride is. But what’s really disappointing is that Adamek would choose to fight a guy like McBride.

This is a weak fight to the extreme and it’s not like Adamek has been facing quality fighters since moving up to the heavyweight division in 2009. Adamek’s opposition has made David Haye’s look incredible in comparison. Adamek has fought guys like Andre Golota, 42, Michael Grant, 38 and Vinny Maddalone. Those are guys that are fodder opponents. You have to wonder why Adamek hasn’t been eager to take on better heavyweights like Samuel Peter, Eddie Chambers, Denis Boytsov, Alexander Povetkin or Alexander Dimitrenko.

It looks like Adamek has opted to take on the easiest opposition available to keep winning and get a title shot against one of the Klitschkos. The only good thing I can think of coming from this is that once Adamek is wiped out by one of the Klitschkos, he’ll likely be so easily beaten that it will be silly to even consider seeing him fight for another title in the future. Hopefully, this will be his only shot because I don’t see him facing five or six more B level fighters and then getting another title shots, and of course losing that one too.
