By Scott Gilfoid: I for one am hoping World Boxing Organization (WBO) super featherweight champion Ricky Burns (30-2, 7 KO’s) steps it up this year in 2011 and doesn’t decide to milk his WBO title in order to try and hold onto it a little longer. I want to see the guy face a life body and see what he’s made of. We saw what Burns could do with a weight drained Roman Martinez last year in September when Burns got up off the deck in the 1st and won a close 12 round decision.
But instead of giving Martinez a rematch or taking on a dangerous opponent like Jorge Linares, Jason Litzau or Robert Guerrero, Burns decided to defend his WBO title against the little known Andreas Evensen in December. Burns, of course, beat the obscure fighter, defeating him by a 12 round unanimous decision. But I don’t want to see this guy milking the title in 2011. I want to see what happens to Burns when you put him in with Guerrero, Litzau, Juan Manuel Lopez, Mzonke Fana or Takahiro Aoh.
I expect Burns to get blasted out by all of those guys, but at least it would be a good fight instead of seeing Burns pound on fighters that I’ve never even heard of. He’s got to make the most of his 15 minutes of fame by going after some live bodies. I really want to see what Lopez does with Burns. That would be fun. I can just picture Juan Manuel Lopez kicking Burns around the ring all night long in a hopelessly one-sided fight. They need to make that fight happen.
