Tyson Fury doesn’t want Haye to retire yet

By William Mackay: Undefeated 6’9″ heavyweight prospect Tyson Fury (13-0, 9 KO’s) is hoping that World Boxing Association (WBA) heavyweight champion David Haye (25-1, 23 KO’s) will prolong his career beyond this year so that Fury can get a chance to fight him. Haye, 30, has made a promise to himself that he will be retiring later on this year in October at the age of 31-years-old rather than staying on and continuing to fight and make money in the sport.

Haye doesn’t want to end up like a lot of boxers do by staying on too long in his career and end up taking punishment after his skills have eroded. By retiring at 31, Haye will have avoided this terrible fate, even though there’s a good chance that his career will end on a sour note with knockout losses to one or both of the Klitschko brothers. Those are two main fighters that Haye is targeting in 2011.

In an article at the mirror.co.uK, Fury says “I would be upset if Haye retired at the end of the year because I want to relive him of the world titles in the ring. Haye will be doing me a favor by unifying the titles [by beating both of the Klitschko brothers], so I hope he stays around long enough to fight me. I have no doubts I’ll soon be ready to take on and beat Haye. I can’t see the point in retiring at his age. It would be great for British boxing for us to get it on and give the public a genuine world title fight.”

Fury will have to speed up his career by a large measure if he wants to get the attention of Haye, because Fury is still being matched up against 2nd and 3rd tier heavyweights. It’s hard to take Fury seriously when he’s still fighting the B and C level fighters and not really shinning. He didn’t look spectacular in his last three fights against John McDermott, Rich Power and Zack Page. These are guys that he should have been able to beat without any problem if he were in the class of the Klitschko brothers and Haye, yet Fury looked sloppy and often tired in each one of these fights.
