Vitali Klitschko vs. Odlanier Solis on March 12th in Germany

By Eric Thomas: According to the latest boxing news, WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (41-2, 38 KO’s) will be defending his title against mandatory challenger unbeaten Odlanier Solis (17-0, 12 KO’s) in a fight that will be taking place in Germany. Solis, a heavyset former 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist from Cuba, recently defeated Ray Austin in an unimpressive 10th round disqualification in their World Boxing Council heavyweight eliminator bout on December 17th.

Solis looked fat, slow and lazy in that fight but was able to hurt Austin in the 10th with a series of hard shots. Austin then shot himself in the foot when he bent Solis over the ropes to buy time to recover. When the referee got them back to the upright position, Austin took the opportunity to land a sucker punch on Solis. At that point the referee immediately disqualified Austin.

Vitali, 39, seems less than thrilled at getting Solis as his next opponent. Vitali wants to fight WBA heavyweight champion David Haye instead. However, Haye has shown absolutely zero interest in fighting Vitali recently. Other than Haye, there’s really only one other good option for Vitali and that’s Tomasz Adamek. However, Adamek is now set to fight Vitali’s younger brother IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in September. With Adamek already booked up to face Wladimir and Haye not interested in fighting, Vitali is going to have to really do some searching once he gets the fight out of the way against the short and fat Solis. This will likely be as easy fight for Vitali, because Solis has become too heavy to fight hard for more than a few rounds without gassing out and doing nothing for long stretches of time.
