Image: Mosley hoping to get a rematch with Mayweather after Pacquiao boutBy Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Shane Mosley (46-6-1, 39 KO’s) is hoping to get a second crack at Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0, 25 KO’s) this year if Mosley can get by his next fight against Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KO’s) on May 7th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. For the aging 39-year-old Mosley, back to back fights against Pacquiao and Mayweather would be the equivalent of a golden parachute to help ease Mosley’s retirement from boxing.

It’s hard to envision getting by Pacquiao, much less getting a second fight with Mayweather, who already totally dominated Mosley in a one-sided 12 round decision win a year ago in May. That fight was just ugly to watch after the 2nd round, as Mayweather boxed circles around Mosley, peppering him with jabs and pinpoint punches for the last 10 rounds of the bout. Mosley would have to beat Pacquiao soundly for Mayweather to even consider giving him a rematch. In theory, it’s possible that Mayweather might decide to fight Mosley again, but it’s not very realistic given how poorly Mosley is fighting right now.

Besides his loss to Mayweather last year, Mosley fought to a 12 round draw with Sergio Mora last September in a fight that many people thought Mora should have won. The outcome aside, Mosley looked every bit of his 39-years in that fight and he’s looked old in both of his last two fights. For Mosley to come back from those fights and fight well enough to beat Pacquiao is hard to imagine. It’s possible but not likely. Mosley’s best, perhaps only chance, is to blitz Pacquiao early and try to stop him before Mosley runs out of gas after the 2nd round. Mosely is more of a 3 round fighter at this point in his career, and if Pacquiao makes it past the 3rd in one piece, you can look for Mosley to take a terrible beating.
