Legacy’s are doomed without each other?

By Benny Fagan: For the last 18 months all boxing fans have talked about is the fights that are not being made. For their entire career’s the top fighters talk about their legacy’s that they will leave in boxing. It’s obvious for all to see, who actually want to see that the legacy left by 5 fighters in particular will only be who they didn’t fight as opposed to how good they were.

Floyd Mayweather has all the skills a boxer could ask for and boy can he sell a fight! However in 20 years’ time people will say Floyd Mayweather was a great boxer but he didn’t fight Pacquiao! Manny will be remembered as the man who fought at multiple weights, had fast hands and a big heart but he refused to take blood tests (to begin with) to fight Mayweather.

Obviously the heavyweight brothers Wladamir and Vitali Klitschko will not fight each other, which is fair enough, but one man they should probably be fighting over is David Haye and who fights him first. Either Klitschko could of signed a deal to fight Haye before their recent commitments to both Dereck Chisora and Odlanier Solis respectively but it didn’t happen. Haye, I’m sure was a very difficult man to deal with in the first couple of negotiations before they broke down prior to the farce that was the Audley Harrison fight. But according to Haye and Booth his trainer, they conceded on every issue that was raised and the fight didn’t happen, no denials on what Haye and Booth said have come out to my knowledge.

All these men have taken their fair share of bad press for these fights not happening and all have had questions asked about how good they actually are and how good the fighters are that they have actually fought in the past have been. For me my frustration that these fights have not happened lie solely in the fact that I have not yet had the chance to watch them get in the ring with each other, not the trash talking of who has a better record or who is dodging who, which many fight fans have resorted to in the wake of their favourite boxers not taking the fights we all desperately want to see.

The heavyweight division is shot to pieces, there are no good fights out there in that division unless it has the names Haye and Klitschko in it. Equally with Mayweather and Pacquiao, they are the best pound for pound fighters out there and by a long distance too. There is nobody that is going to push either one as close as they would push each other.

If we as boxing fans are honest with ourselves it does not really matter who any of these guys fight, unless they fight each other it’s not going to be good enough for us. We will always take the stance that if these fights are available and they choose to fight someone else that one of them is scared and does not want to fight. As far as their legacy’s in boxing go without each other it will not mean anything because there will always be BUT! after any praise we afford them to any of them.
