Image: Klitschko vs. Chisora: To beat Wladimir, Dereck must fight an inside warBy Dave Lahr: Dereck Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s) needs to go back to old tapes of IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko’s defeats against Corrie Sanders, Ross Puritty, and Lamon Brewster to try and figure out how he can beat him on April 30th when they fight at the SAP Arena, in Mannheim, Germany. Chisora won’t be able to beat Wladimir by standing on the outside like most of Wladimir’s opponents have foolishly done in the past. Chisora has to walk Wladimir down and get inside as quickly as possible to feast on Wladimir’s head and take advantage of his inability to fight in close.

You can’t beat the tall 6’6″ Ukrainian if you stand outside trying to dodge his shots. His arms are too long, his jab is too good and he doesn’t tire from throwing shots when he’s not pressured. This is why it’s imperative for Chisora to bum rush Wladimir at every instant and get inside and tear into him while he’s trying to grab.

No doubt Wladimir’s trainer Emanuel Steward will have coached him to clinch hard in a tight bear-hug to keep from getting hit when he’s clinching constantly 24/7 against Chisora. However, Chisora will still be able to punch even with Wladimir grabbing him. This is why he needs to tee off on Wladimir to the side of the head and wherever his shots can land to get an advantage. I see Wladimir’s clinching as being Chisora’s best opportunity to win this fight, because Chisora can’t compete from the outside, but he has a great chance with Wladimir grabbing him all night.
