Image: Haye-Wladimir fight off for now, Haye has to decide who to fight nextBy Jason Kim: The chances for WBA heavyweight champion David Haye to fight both of the Klitschko brothers before retiring in October of this year took a major hit when IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko suddenly announced that he’ll be facing unbeaten Dereck Chisora on April 30th instead of facing Haye. This is obviously disappointing news for boxing fans, as the Haye-Klitschko negotiations were reportedly going well as of late.

However, a venue for the fight and the date couldn’t be found soon enough to please Wladimir and so he decided to keep busy. The earliest they could find for Haye-Klitschko was July 2nd, a date that would work for both Sky and RTL television. For Haye, he’s going to have to change his retirement plans if he still has hopes of fighting both of the Klitschko brothers before hanging up his gloves. If Haye does fight Wladimir on July 2nd, and that’s a big ‘if’, the earliest that Haye could hope for in a fight with WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko is November, which is one month beyond Haye’s retirement date. It’s actually kind of silly.

It all boils down to this: If Haye wants the fights with both Klitschkos, he’s obviously going to have to be adult enough to alter his retirement plans by a short amount of time. If he can’t handle this and is rigidly sticking to October, then he’ll simply be shooting himself in the foot and losing out on the many millions that would have padded his retirement. Postponing his retirement by three or four months won’t hurt him any, as he won’t won’t suddenly become a shot fighter overnight in early 2012.

With Wladimir fighting Chisora, Haye is going to have to decide whether he’s just going to sit idle and hope that the fight with Wladimir will go down in July or whether he should keep busy and collect another easy payday against the mostly horrible contenders that the WBA has ranked in the top 15. Haye should be able to pick one of those guys out and easily beat him. That would be the smart thing to do.
