Image: Business of boxing – a new look at the David Haye situationby Ben James: Over the last few years we have experienced the hype of David ‘Hayemaker’ Haye and his transition from undisputed cruiserweight champion of the world to a heavyweight contender.

The man has been boxing all of his life, boxing is his life. He wants to be known as the best in the world and he has the power, speed, skill, confidence and intelligence to make it happen, now combine that with his charisma and ability to court media attention and a star is born.

When Haye became undisputed cruiserweight champion everyone around him told him “this is it, your going to be a star, your life will change”, but it did not. The British media ignored him just like they currently ignore Carl Froch. It seems the British media only pay attention to fighters promoted by Frank Warren. Naseem Hamed, Ricky Hatton, Amir Khan… all promoted by Frank Warren, all superstars because of their talent and media attention.

At the end of the day boxing is a business. It is all about the money for the sanctioning bodies (WBA, WBO, WBC etc..), its all about the money for the promoters and the fighters.

People give Haye a lot of stick for backing out with his fight with Wladimir Klitschko the other year, but just look what has happened from a business perspective since the canceled fight. Haye had to literally hound Klitschko in the media, personally attacking him and making him look stupid just to get the fight. Haye was under a crazy 3 fight contract where everything was in the favour of the two brothers. They took almost all of the money, they picked the gloves, the ring, the ref, the location, they were in full control. David Haye was only getting paid from his deal with the TV channel SETANTA which went bust just weeks before the fight, leaving David Haye to risk his career and the prospect of achieving his dreams for very little return.

Then Haye went and won the WBA world title and suddenly he was on the same level as the brothers, he had something they want from him, combine this with all the media attention he received after becoming a heavyweight champion and you can see why the brothers now chase Haye to make the fight happen.

Hayes American promoter Oscar De La Hoya believes the showdown between Haye and the Klitschkos will be worth £50,000,000 to David Haye. That is a hell of a lot of money and they have been milking it, hyping the fight up for years now. Haye made millions beating his mandatory John Ruiz, and then destroying the over matched (Fr) Audley Harrison,

The business of boxing is what will decide who gets what fights, and Haye is a true businessman of the sport, he has played the game and he has won. He could have stayed at cruiserweight beating every new fighter which came along, making a steady income, but he rolled the dice, ran his mouth, gambled his reputation on becoming the best heavyweight in the world and now he has no where else to go.

He is going to retire before the end of 2011. His judgment day is here, this is it. Haye will either go down in history as the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis or he will be forgotten and regarded as the pretender who could not back up his mouth in the ring,

Either way the business of boxing has guaranteed what ever happens David Haye will retire in 2011 with millions and millions of pounds in the bank.
