Adamek to face 38-year-old Hasim Rahman next?

By Dan Ambrose: Heavyweight contender Tomasz Adamek (43-1, 28 KO’s) could be facing former heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman in Adamek’s next fight in April, according to the latest boxing news. There was talk of Adamek stepping it up from the old fighters that he’s been feasting on since moving up to the heavyweight division by facing Samuel Peter, but it looks like that fight likely won’t be happening.

The choice of the 38-year-old Rahman, who looked absolutely terrible in getting blasted out by IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, is one that seems to fit in the pattern of the typical Adamek opponent since moving up to the heavyweight division.

Adamek has faced 38-year-old Michael Grant, 42-year-old Andrew Golota, 37-year-old Vinny Maddalone, along with the more youthful Chris Arreola at 28, and 30-year-old Jason Estrada. Adamek is ranked #1 WBO, #3 IBF and #3 WBC. Those are mighty high rankings to be given for wins over these kinds of heavyweights.

As old as these guys are, it’s a wonder that Adamek has even broken into the top 15. I’d like to think that to get to the top five you should have a win over someone like Alexander Povetkin or Denis Boytsov instead of these guys.

Rahman hasn’t one much since being taken out by Wladimir two years ago. After the loss to Wladimir in 2008, Rahman didn’t fight again until March 2010, and has beaten the following heavyweights in 2010: Clinton Boldridge, Shannon Miller, Damon Reed and Marcus McGee. Those are all 2nd tier heavyweights.

I really don’t know what Adamek can be getting out of fighting a guy like Rahman. This isn’t going to prepare Adamek for the kind of backside whipping he’s going to be getting against one of the Klitschko brothers, and I don’t see the point in this fight.

Adamek needs someone that will actually prepare him in some kind of way, if that’s at all possible. I’d much rather see Adamek face Samuel Peter. At least that fight would mimic the kind of power shots Adamek would be eating all night long against Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko.
