HBO VP wants Haye-Klitschko in Las Vegas

By Jim Dower: If WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-1, 23 KO’s) has his way his big unification bout with IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) would take place at the Wembley stadium in the UK. However, that may not happen if HBO’s senior vice president Key Davis gets his way, He wants the fight to happen in Las Vegas, Nevada, the hub of many of the biggest fights in the United States.

It would actually work out because it would be a neutral venue, although Klitschko would likely have far more fans present at the fight than Haye, who the average casual boxing isn’t yet familiar with. Golden Boy Promotions executives Richard Schaefer and Oscar De La Hoya want the Haye-Klitschko fight take place next in early 2011. One thing that might get in the way of the fight happening next is the Dereck Chisora, who has a clause in his contract with Wladimir stating that he has to fight him within 180.

The two were supposed to fight this weekend but Wladimir pulled out with an abdominal injury. Chisora says he doesn’t want to step aside to allow the Haye-Klitschko fight to take place first. It probably doesn’t matter whether he gets his fight next or not because he’ll do well regardless just by taking on the winner of the Haye vs. Klitschko fight, but he may make things difficult for a Haye-Klitschko fight to take place next.

Speaking to the guardian.co.uk, Davis said “It’s always our preference as an American broadcaster to have the fight in the United States. It’s a business. I’m sure the promoters are going to go where they can maximize their revenue. We would have one level of interest if the fight was in the United States, and a different level of interest out of the United States. That’s because it wouldn’t be happening in our prime time.”
