Image: Froch doesn't think Ward has a signifcant win on his resume, doesn't give him credit for Kessler winBy Scott Gilfoid: WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KO’s) doesn’t want to give the talented American WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward for being the best super middleweight in the world after his outstanding 12 round decision win over Sakio Bika last weekend. For some reason, Froch doesn’t think that Ward has any significant wins on his entire resume, despite Ward having beaten Mikkel Kessler, a fighter that Froch was beaten by last April. Froch thinks he actually won the fight, and seems to be totally immune to the comments from neutral boxing fans on the internet. If Froch would just open his eyes and face the truth, he’d get a dose of reality from these fans about his loss to Kessler.

It’s amusing how Froch won’t accept his defeat to Kessler like a good one and learn from it. In Eastsideboxing.com’s On the Ropes Boxing Radio, Froch said “I don’t see how Andre Ward can be up there with the best in the world because he’s not had a significant win. The only fighter he’s fought and won where you could say it was a good victory on paper is Mikkel Kessler, but anybody who watched the fight realized what happened in that fight. If that fight would have taken place in Herning in Denmark where I fought Mikkel Kessler, it would have been a disqualification victory for Kessler. What he did was totally out of order, head butting him, creating cuts about the eyes, and holding. You can’t get away with that unless you are at home. So he’s not got a significant win on his record for me to say he’s the best in the super middleweight in the world. He needs to fight somebody like me. I feel it’s going to be a Froch-Ward final and then we’ll find out who the best super middleweight in the world is, because it isn’t Lucian Bute, I assure you.”

That sounds so sad. Froch sounds completely utterly jealous of Ward’s good press. Ward didn’t beat Kessler because of head butts. He beat him from round one until the bitter end in the eleventh. There was no accidental head butts early in the fight, and Kessler was getting schooled then. How does Froch explain that? He can’t. Ward whipped Kessler every which way you can, and fighting at home had nothing to do with it. But I do think Froch got away with murder fighting in Nottingham against Andre Dirrell last year. Now that was a fight that should have been a disqualification when Froch melted down in the 5th and body slammed Dirrell. Froch spent the better part of the rest of the fight fouling with rabbit punches, holding and hitting and shoving Dirrell’s head down. And the one that got penalized was Dirrell. Yes, it’s nice to fight at home. I saw tons of instances where I think Froch should have been disqualified.

I don’t think Froch will ever get to the point where he faces Ward in the finals, because he’s going to probably get beaten up by Glen Johnson in his next Super Six tournament match next year. Johnson is 41, but throws a lot of punches and has better power than Froch. Don’t be deceived by the losses on Johnson’s records, many of the defeats have been robberies and not a situation where he got dominated. But I’m hoping Froch wins that fight so he can make it to the finals just so that Ward can show him what it’s like to be in the ring with the best fighter in the super middleweight division. I figure Ward will have to knock Froch out because anything less than that and we’ll probably have Froch claiming that he won the fight. If Froch thinks that he beat Kessler and that Ward should have been disqualified for his win over Kessler, then I can see Froch not accepting a decision loss to Ward. I can see Froch having the same stance about the Ward loss as he does with his clear defeat at the hands of Kessler.
