Daniel Jacobs fights on Khan-Maidana undercard this Saturday

By Jason Kim: Once beaten middleweight contender Daniel Jacobs (20-1, 17 KO’s) will be seeing action this Saturday night on the Amir Khan vs. Marcos Maidana undercard at the Mandalay Bay Resorts & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. This will be Jacob’s first fight since he was stopped in the 5th round by Russian middleweight contender Dmitry Pirog in a failed attempt for Jacobs in capturing the vacant World Boxing Organization middleweight title in July.

Jacobs, 23, was never competitive in the fight and got blasted out by a powerful right hand from Pirog. Jacobs is currently ranked #9 by the WBO, but needs to be brought along at a slower pace because he didn’t have any clue in how to handle the style of Pirog in that fight. While Jacobs does have decent power, his chin seems to be a big liability for him because he was not only hurt in the Pirog fight but was also hurt in his fight with Ishe Smith in August 2009.

Jacobs is going to have to learn how to box more and choose his spots to throw his power shots. He can’t just hope to crush his opponents like he’s been doing since he was brought up in 2007. Jacobs had been matched very carefully by his promoters up until the fight with Smith. In hindsight, it wasn’t a wised move to have been rushed into the fight with Pirog without having faced at least two or three upper tier fighters beforehand.

Don’t expect Jacobs to be matched against anyone good thing Saturday because he’s not ready for anyone good at this point.
