Image: Khan says he has as much power as MaidanaBy William Mackay: In the latest boxing news, WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (23-1, 17 KO’s) has a fight this Saturday night against knockout artist Marcos Maidana (29-1, 27 KO’s), who is considered to be the biggest puncher in the entire division. However, Khan, a fighter that mostly slaps with his punches, is under the impression that he can punch as hard as Maidana.

Given that Khan has been matched almost exclusively with 2nd tier and weak punching 1st tier opponents with the exception of Breidis Prescott, it seems laughable that Khan would consider himself as big a puncher as Maidana. Speaking with the dailymail.co.uk, Khan said “I hope Maidana believes when he says that he will be the only puncher in that ring. He’s in for a big surprise because I have at least as much power as he does.”

Khan is really kidding himself if he thinks he punches as hard as Maidana, because he’s not in the same league as the Argentinean. Khan slaps and when he tries to load up with his shots, he’s really vulnerable to getting knocked out. If he wants to slug with Maidana on Saturday this could wind up being a very short fight, because Maidana hits too hard and Khan’s chin is too fragile to take Maidana’s shots without him going down. Maidana loads up on everything he throws.

That’s his whole style and he’s very good at it. Khan needs to stick with what’s gotten him to this point in his career. He’s good at jabbing, slapping and moving around the ring. But if he tries to match Maidana with power shots, Khan is going to get knocked cold because he’ll have to take Maidana’s big shots in order for him to land his own power punches.
