My take on Froch’s win over Abraham

Image: My take on Froch's win over AbrahamBy Scott Gilfoid: I just want to start off by saying how bad Arthur Abraham (31-2, 25 KO’s) now looks after the beating he took against Andre Dirrell last March. He’s not the same fighter, and I think he was on the way down hill even before that fight. But Carl Froch (27-1, 20 Ko’s) was able to take advantage of what was there and pound out a fairly easy 12 round unanimous decision. The judges scored it 119-109, 120-108 and 120-108, all for Froch. I’m in agreement more or less with those scores. I do think Froch should have been penalized multiple times for low blows and a series of rabbit punches he threw. I wouldn’t argue against Froch being disqualified for his many fouls in this fight.

Froch went low blow happy in the 11th round when he nailed Abraham with at least four clearly low shots below the belt. In the 12th, Froch landed a text book version of a right hand rabbit punch directly in front of the referee, and yet he wasn’t or had points taken off. It was pretty outrageous if you ask me. I saw elbows, low blows and rabbit shots, you name it, from Froch. I could have put together a book on fouling from all the fouls I saw from Froch in this fight.

It was more than ugly. With all the rabbit shots and low blows I saw, I had the fight scored much closer. I still had Froch winning, but the margin was a lot less because I think he should have had at least a minimum of five points take off for low blows. I personally saw seven instances where I thought Froch should have lost points but didn’t. I was wondering after awhile whether this fight was really in Finland or in good old Nottingham, because I saw Froch getting away with a lot of extracurricular activity.

As far as the actual fighting goes, I thought Abraham looked horrid. That was some terrible fighting from him. The guy was afraid to commit in an all out fashion, which is what he needed to get the win. It looked like he was too worried about losing his stamina and held back until the final round when he finally started teeing off on Froch. By then it was too late, Abraham didn’t have enough gas to take Froch out at that point. I think Abraham has no business in the Super Six. He’s just too short, too conservative with his punch output and too nice of a guy to beat anyone except for Jermain Taylor. It’s good that he only has one fight left in the tournament, because I’d hate to see Abraham get beat up by Glen Johnson. Andre Ward gets to be the next one that takes care of Abraham, and believe, he’ll do it in a lot better style than Froch.

Froch looked stiff and robotic all fight long, missing wildly at times and fighting as if he were fighting on stilts. I wasn’t impressed at all. He has no fluidity and seems uncoordinated. Like I said, Froch fouls a lot and I think he should have lost a lot of points on Saturday night. I don’t see any masterclass whatsoever from him. I just saw a slow, rigid, taller fighter beating up on a short fighter that is on the downside of his career and who has no business fighting at super middleweight. I don’t know what it is with Froch, but he fights like he’s got a stick taped to his backside. Just such an ugly fighting style. No athleticism.

I have serious doubts that Froch will win his next Super Six tournament fight against 41-year-old Glen Johnson. I don’t think Froch can win that fight, because Johnson, unlike Abraham, throws a lot of punches and had good power. I see him beating Froch black and blue. Forget about Froch against Ward. He would have no chance against Ward in my view. Ward is on a different level the way I see it. Froch’s win over Abraham was really his first win in the tournament from my perspective because I think Froch should have lost his first fight of the tournament against Dirrell, and he clearly lost his next tourney fight against Mikkel Kessler. So, the win over Abraham was his first win. Big deal, he beats a softened up Abraham. I’m not going to crown Froch the king of the Super six based on this flimsy win.
