Froch says his fight with Abraham will be good for the sport

Image: Froch says his fight with Abraham will be good for the sportBy Scott Gilfoid: Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KO’s) seems to be convinced that his upcoming November 27th Super Six tourney fight with Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25 KO’s) is going to be an exciting affair for boxing fans to witness, but I’m not so sure about that. The two fighters are mixing it up in Finland two weeks from now, and both of them are coming off of terrible performances in defeats in their last Super Six tournament fights. Froch hasn’t looked good in any of his two Super Six tournament fights, and neither of them I would describe as coming close to being exciting affairs. And Abraham did almost nothing in his first fight of the tournament against Jermain Taylor until knocking him out in the 12th with a right hand.

Abraham fought equally poor in his fight with the boxing whirlwind Andre Dirrell in March, doing little in that fight until trying to rally in the 10th and then fouling out in the 11th. Abraham has the power, but not the work rate to make for exciting fights.

In an article at the dailystart.co.uk, Froch said “I can do boxing a favor. Look at my last few fights and how exciting they have all been. This fight will be a better spectacle for fans. With me, you are guaranteed someone turning up who gives it their heart and soul and who will be trying to win. Abraham is the same. He doesn’t want to lose and he means business. It is his first world title shot at super middleweight so he is going to come and fight to get that belt. It is going to be a great and exciting for British and good for the sport.”

Froch only fought hard during a handful of rounds in his loss to Mikkel Kessler in April. Froch started off fighting on the back foot, then seemed to get tired in the middle of the fight before trying to rally in the 11th and 12th. That performance was far from exciting unless you like fighters looking tired and fighting in brief spurts. It wasn’t interesting at all, and my thoughts were that Froch didn’t train hard enough for the fight. Either that or he was starting to show signs of getting old. And Abraham did zero against Dirrell until the fight was well out of his reach in the 10th. He needed a knockout to win and it wasn’t going to be happening against the talented Dirrell.

Both Abraham and Froch’s recent performances reminded me of a school boy who had put off doing his homework until the last second and was then trying to do as best as he could to get it done before it was too late. For Froch and Abraham, there wasn’t a steady performance from either of them in their last fights. They just looked lackadaisical to me. This is why I don’t have much expectation from the Arthur-Froch fight on the 27th. I see Froch walking out with his hands dangling around his knee caps, getting tagged, and then getting counted out.
