Sprott wins Prizefighter tourney, gunning for Haye, Rogan or the Klitschko brothers next

By Sean McDaniel: Michael Sprott (35-15, 17 KO’s) captured the Prizefighter heavyweight tournament with three wins over Matt Skelton, Danny Hughes and Shane McPhilbin in three round decision bouts. It was good that the 35-year-old Sprott won the tourney, but look at the opposition he was facing. Each one of them were 2nd tier fighters, including Sprott.

After the fight, Sprott said “We’ll see what happens with Martin Rogan, Audley Harrison and now I’m just waiting to see if I can maybe go for the European title or a world title defense against one of the Klitschkos or David Haye.” Before entering the Prizefighter tourney, Srott had lost five out of his last seven fights. However, with this win, Sprott could be a target for World Boxing Association heavyweight champion David Haye, who’s facing Harrison next on November 13th. Given that Haye appears to be milking his WBA title against soft opposition, he may opt to go for a fight against Sprott knowing that the British public would likely be interested in seeing this fight for some reason.

Sprott looked okay in his wins over the inexperienced McPhilbin and Hughes. However, against Skelton he had to really fight hard at the end, and he looked tired. Neither Sprott or Skelton threw very many punches earlier in the first two rounds, but Skelton came on in the third to make it interesting. Sprott showed the better power and landed the harder shots in the fight. However, it’s hard to take a win over the likes of Skelton, Hughes and McPhilbin and see Sprott as deserving a title shot against Haye or the Klitschko brothers. Hopefully, Haye doesn’t decide to milk his title even more by taking on Sprott rather than the Klitschko brothers or one of the top contenders in the WBA.
