Dirrell needs to be symptom free for three months before he can fight again

By Scott Gilfoid: It’s going to be at least three months and possibly more before Andre Dirrell (19-1, 13 KO’s) can have a chance to start fighting again. According to the Detroit Free Press, Dirrell’s medical doctor, Dr. Shaw, needs the talented Dirrell to be free of symptoms of his head injury for at least three months before he’ll consider clearing him to fight again.

This is good news because it gives boxing fans and Dirrell a date to work with. Dirrell had to pull out of the Super Six tournament due to an injury he sustained in his last Super Six tournament fight against Arthur Abraham on March 27th. In that fight, Abraham landed a right hand while Dirrell was on the canvas after having slipped.

The punch, one of the best that Abraham threw in the fight, landed square on the left side of Dirrell’s face, causing his head to whiplash violently. Dirrell then went down immediately as if he had been shot with an elephant gun. While down, Dirrell’s legs twitched, a hallmark sign of someone who has been knocked out.

Dirrell was rewarded with a disqualification win. However, he hasn’t been the same since that tragic night, says his co-trainer and uncle Leon Lawson Jr. Dirrell has been suffering from headaches and dizziness since that night, and that’s not a good sigh.

Dirrell needs a lot of time to let his brain heal from the punch that he wasn’t expecting. Dirrell has a great chin, but when you get hit full force on the side of your head by a shot that you’re not expecting, it can often cause a lot of damage. Dirrell is still young at 27, so he should be able to recover in time. He just turned 27, and is young enough to heal and get back in the ring in a short period of time.

But it’s such a tragedy that a fighter as talented as Dirrell is injured through no fault of his own and unable to finish out the Super Six tournament. He had an excellent chance of winning the tournament and making a lot more money. But now he’s hurt and forced to rest for three months while his braining recovers slowly.
